HARMSEN HOUSE REVEAL
Today we are doing a photo reveal of our Harmsen House project. We worked closely with Powell Paint Center using only Benjamin Moore products to completely transform this home!
I actually met my client Dave when he began doing my taxes after I got my first 'real' job at Nike after college. A couple years later, we began talking about the home Dave and his girlfriend recently acquired that need a TON of work! I knew that I wanted to take part and help this couple revamp their newly purchased 1920's Portland Craftsman.

The first order of business was to gut nearly the entire home as many of the features were not tried and true to the 'Craftsman' theme. The client knew that he ultimately wanted a house that prominently displayed all the characteristics you would expect to see in an original Portland craftsman. The trick on our end was helping the client conceptualize different approaches to creating warm and inviting spaces that were both period correct while also being modern and updated at the same time.
The home had a lot of darkness, weird closed off spaces, small rooms, a toilet in the Master closet (ehh!) and an unfinished basement. We did two Bedrooms, three Bathrooms, Master closet, Entry, Living, Dining, Kitchen, Den, basement Bar and Office.
They wanted something bright and clean where they would be able to mix and match all of their furniture together for the first time after our work was complete. When two people live together for the very first time, generally styles and interest differ. Thats where we come in. We were so excited to be able to take both of their wish lists and incorporate them into a new beginning for both of them to enjoy!
We added a massive amount of millwork all from McCoy Millwork in PDX. This included all new trim (windows/base/doors), cabinetry + built-ins, crown moulding, a box-beam ceiling and a grid wall. By adding all the weight into the individual rooms, you really get the sense this is what should have been here the entire time. For this project, the client wanted the house to feel lived in + original. We had to create a balance between updates without making it feel like everything was perfect, new and polished.
We also made a few bold choices with color. All of the ceilings and almost all of the trim was Simply White to keep things bright and white. Wall colors were all kept fairly light and neutral to open up the house as much as possible. In the Master Bedroom, we used Newburg Green, a blue-green that changes with the light and really keeps things cozy with the coved ceilings. Our client wanted a blue Kitchen so we went with Van Courtland Blue which made a huge impact! The basement Bath was a tiny awkward space that we transformed with floor to ceiling color using Onyx.
